There was once a fairy tale about origin of the Mid-Autumn festival.
In the ancient China, there were ten suns in the sky, torturing people day & night. The land was also severely destroyed by their constant light and heat. It seemed that no one would survive long. But a great warrior, called HouYi, felt sympathy for people's situation, so he decided to use his power to save this country. One day, he finally eliminated nine suns with his mighty bow and arrows. Then he regulated the last sun to rise and fall on time. So the land recovered thereafter and people could survive by doing farm work again.
HouYi was admired by his great achievement. What's more, he was rewarded with a pack of elixir. It was said that he could fly to the heaven and become an immortal by eating it. HouYi didn't want to leave his wife-Chang'e, so he gave her the elixir and told her to keep it temporarily. Once he got another elixir, they would fly to heavean and live together forever. However, "Where there is lure, there will be evil." One of HouYi's students, broke in the house and threatened Chang'e to give him the elixir when HouYi was absent. Chang'e couldn't protect the elixir by herself, yet she refused to surrender, either. She swallowed the elixir quickly instead of letting the bad student succeed. Then she immediately flew above to the sky and landed on the moon which was the nearest place to the mortal world due to her missing to her husband.
Soon HouYi returned. He was so angry and sad after knowing what had happened. He didn't find the bad student to revenge as he already ran away. With great sorrow and anger, he yelled Chang'e's name to the sky. Suddenly he found out that there was a shadow on the bright moon, which looked much like her wife's figure. HouYi missed Chang'e so much, so he went to her favourite garden and prepared a dinner which included all her favourite food. Through this way, he wished he could accompany her even from a far distance, though.
The people knew the sad accident later. So they also prepared meals under the moonlight in order to pray Chang'e's safety and auspiciousness. Since then, every year people would get together and worship the moon.
